Club goin’ up, on a Tuesday

It’s been awhile since I’ve recced new music to you guys, so I wanted to give you all some of my current new faves, plus a playlist.

These two artist could not be more different. One is a lanky, long haired white guy from the UK, and the other is a rapper from Detroit.

James Bay needs to jump on your radar immediately if he’s not already there. Currently, he has four EPs, with a full album set for a March 23 release date. If you like Ed Sheeran, Hozier, or Ray LaMontagne, you’re going to love James Bay. This 24 year old, guitar playing Brit is a joy to listen to. Recently, his song, Let It Go (not to be confused with Frozen of course), was featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. He was also featured in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge today where he did a dynamite cover of Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney’s song, FourFiveSeconds. This kid has tremendous lyrics, and a powerhouse soulful/folky voice. He’s got a small tour making the rounds in the US next month, so if tickets aren’t sold out, make sure you get yourself one!

My second recommendation is Big Sean. Now, I always love when I can recommend a hometown kid, so this is doubly great for me. His new album Dark Sky Paradise is a banger. Lately, I’ve had a hard time listening to a lot of hip hop albums all the way through, then putting them back on repeat. Like Kanye, and Jay-Z’s last albums…meh? [Kanye shrug]. Kendrick Lamar’s latest was amazing, but it seems like my taste in hip hop is shifting a bit and Big Sean’s flow and style runs right into what I’m looking for, and what I can’t turn off. There are some heavy hitters on this album: Drake, Kanye, and Lil Wayne just to name a few. A lot of his songs have lowkey nods to Detroit, and his rhymes are more heartfelt than I expected. He doesn’t put on a front like he was out struggling in the streets, or drug dealing, but he does write about his life growing up, and how long it took him to get this far in fame (he’s been signed since 2007). My particular faves on the album are: All Your Fault, Blessings, and Play No Games.

    • Reflections: MisterWives
    • What Kind Of Man: Florence + The Machine
    • Only: Nicki Minaj
    • Electric Love: BORNS
    • Work Song: Hozier
    • Real: Years & Years
    • Earned It: The Weeknd
    • FourFiveSeconds: Rihanna

Happy listening!
