Every Friday we’ll pick a theme and then five things (hence the name! We’re so original!!!!!) that fit that theme. Feel free to make your own choices in the comments, or send them to us on Twitter. This week we’re talking about our fave drag performers. Yasssss.
Lauren’s pick: Nina West from Columbus Ohio
If I am going to recommend you google a drag queen for some impressive shows and looks, one of my go to queens would be Nina West. Nina has all the facets you want in a drag queen. She is exciting to watch, a great show host, has great costumes & performances, but most of all she is a HUGE community activist. I don’t know that I personally have see another queen so active in her city and giving back as much as she can.
Lauren’s pick: Trixie Mattel
Of all the RuPaul’s Drag Race participants, Trixie is by far my favorite. From the moment she walked into the dressing room she stole my heart. I have enjoyed her performances when I get to see them and her humor really strikes home with me (once a MidWesterner, always a MidWesterner). Although some people might not get her look, I love it.
I am just slightly biased (Harmony Breeze by night, my hairstylist TJ by day), but considering Harmony has won a bajillion titles and crowns, I’d say she’s just as fabulous and talented as I think she is. Harmony has been Miss Gay Wisconsin, as well as a ton of local titles, but she was also Miss Gay Days, and still tours with them nationally every year as their emcee. What I love about her is that she rarely ever repeats a look (unless specifically requested or required), and she puts so much thought and time and effort into each performance. Whenever I’m in TJ’s chair I get to hear all about the process of putting a look and a number together, and it’s fascinating. TJ and his husband have their own production company here in Milwaukee, and they put on a bunch of shows in the Southeastern Wisconsin area. Also, Harmony’s Adele cannot be beat.
Ok, Kimberly Clark is amazing! She’s funny but also uses her platform to really try to help others. If you all have seen my “That I’m not Gonna Buy” posts, she’s the inspiration behind it. That’s actually how I discovered her. For me she’s a breath of fresh air. She’s not afraid to admit when she’s wrong either. Listen, I just really, really love her. You should check out her youtube channel here.
Mel’s pick: Tandi Iman Dupree
This is Tandi Iman Dupree from the House of Dupree. For me, no other drag performance will beat this. She is amazing and will forever be my number one.
