Every Friday we’ll pick a theme and then five things (hence the name! We’re so original!!!!!) that fit that theme. Feel free to make your own choices in the comments, or send them to us on Twitter. We know not everyone loves the holidays, so here are our favorite tactics for just getting through.
Okay, I get that this might seem like it’s coming out of left field, but just listen. I am not a real big holiday person. So for me to counteract or deal with the holidays I watch the Sopranos. This is my go-to. I start from the beginning and watch the series through. I usually start it before Thanksgiving and carry on until I’m done with the series. It transports me to a different place and time and lets me avoid holiday feelings by experiencing the opposite of what a holiday can bring.
I find cooking to be really soothing. And it’s like Mel mentions below, it’s making stuff for other people to enjoy, which feels good, but I also get to enjoy the fruits of my labors!
I have made it abundantly clear to anyone I spend any significant amount of time with that I need to be by myself or I will turn into a raging bitch. Thankfully, they are fairly accommodating, but if you’re the same way as me, put your foot down. Me time is important.
I’ve spent the last few years training myself to cope with stress by making things. Now I am a GIANT Grinch and would skip Thanksgiving and Christmas if given the chance. (I have kids and I don’t want to be a complete asshole.) Since I can’t I’ve found that making things for others makes me less likely to start a war with my mother in law. My house looks like a craft store threw up in it right now. My sweet Hubs understands it as a sign I’m stressed and helps me try to contain the mess.
I know makeup means different things to different folks and that’s awesome. For me it’s a way for me to get fancy but come holiday season it’s my armor. As I put it on for the holiday party I’ve been conned into going to I prep myself. The glitter on my eyes and the red of my lips is what I need to make it through.
