This post contains spoilers for the premiere of series four of the BBC’s Sherlock.
I knew they were going dark (it’s been drilled into our heads enough, hasn’t it) but the way that The Six Thatchers ended was pretty brutal.
I went from “look at this happy poly family” to tears pretty quickly. Also, I’m mad at John Watson. I know pretty much everyone is mad at John Watson, but I just want to make sure you know that I am too.
Apparently there’s been a lot of Mary hate floating around? I’m not surprised, of course, and I’m not even saying that some of it is unjustified. She did do A LOT of lying. But when the entire fandom is constantly apologizing for Sherlock’s awful behavior, turning around and roasting Mary is a bit yucky, isn’t it? She was trying to turn her life around. As she says to John at the end, being Mary Watson is all she wanted. She wanted to put the rest of it behind her, even if she couldn’t quite manage it. I imagine that’s a tough situation to get a clean break from, especially when someone is dead set on exposing you.
It doesn’t help that she got herself involved with two men that either seek danger or have it dropped in their laps.
I don’t know if I’m sold on her really being dead either, because it’s Sherlock. We all know how many tricks they have up their sleeves.
Now, I’m not forgiving Sherlock’s rude use of his phone at the christening or any of his other terribleness, but his clear desperation to keep his vow – to keep John and Mary and Rosie safe – is heartbreaking. Especially when Mary ends up dying and it’s not technically Sherlock’s fault. He called both Mary and John to the aquarium, and Mary tried to get John to go ahead of her at first. The lady was going to shoot Sherlock, he had his arms open and waiting even, but Mary leapt in front of the bullet. I don’t blame John for reacting in anger, and we still have time for cooler heads to prevail. We’ll see if that’s the case.
I hope it’s the case. Seeing Sherlock’s face when Molly turned the baby away from him made me ugly sob.
It sucks that a female character who had the potential to be totally awesome, who was an excellent addition to the Baker Street dynamic, get killed off to basically further the drama between the two male leads. I’ll miss the happy poly family we had for about an hour. Babysitter!Sherlock is something I need quite a bit more of, but only if he’s sober please.
OH MY GOD I ALSO NEED SO MANY MORE SCENES WITH SHERLOCK AND TOBY!
It will be interesting to see if anything from this episode ties into Moriarty, or if anything at all does. Maybe he’ll just be hanging over Sherlock’s head, driving him more and more mad. Psychological torture is so effective.
My feelings about the premiere are mixed, but mostly right now I’m sad. For Mary, and Sherlock and John, and for that poor child. I’m definitely already hooked though, and can’t wait for the next episode.
What do you think? Has the line finally been crossed, or are you in it for the long haul?
