The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick started Five Fandom Friday as a community building project, and we jumped on board. We just love things numbered in fives, so we’ve added their topics to our Five Things feature. Check out this week’s #Fandom5 under the cut.
Okay, work with me here. I watch the Food Network by far more than any other TV channel. I am a Chopped junkie. And do you know who I’m talking about if I say “G.Z”? Because that’s what Jeff Mauro called Geoffrey Zakarin on The Kitchen. Speaking of crushes, I have a hopeless crush on Geof Manthorne who works at Charm City Cakes. I watched an entire season of the Great British Bake Off last Saturday. I look up recipes on food blogs pretty much every day. I like picking one ingredient that I want to work with and then going on Pinterest to find recipes for it. I plan my meals well in advance. I do experimental cooking with new foods or to make recipes sugar-free. I have a low-key historical crush on Julia Child. Sure, we all have to eat, but I admit it. I am a cooking nerd.
Elle has talked about this before, but it comes up in my life ALL THE TIME. In a fantasy sports league, you hold a draft with friends to populate a team with current professional athletes, and every game day you set your lineup to try to get the most amount of points. You’re playing a game with a bunch of real people, shifting reality to provide a good outcome for yourself. It’s basically writing real person fan fiction, except fic writers don’t get parties at Buffalo Wild Wings and whole apps by mainstream media to manage their output.
My sister is into makeup, and she spends more time on YouTube and Instagram than I do! There are a million magazines and blogs and Pinterest boards dedicated to makeup and beauty, the trends are always changing, there are specific tools and techniques – I’d say it’s definitely a nerdy pursuit! And one I’d like to be nerdier about, tbh.
NOT NERDY ANYMORE THANK YOU HAMILTON. I’m such a history hipster. I’ve loved history since before it was cool. I was a strange little child who wanted to be a historian when she grew up. I knew going into college that I wanted to major in history and I was lucky enough to get a job in the field right after graduation. History is a huge part of my life and I am a PRO at nerding out over it. I think “history nerd” has become a term of endearment lately, and nothing pleases me more.
Okay, yes there is the stereotypical “horse girl” in middle school (which was me, btw) but I think in general horses aren’t seen as nerdy. They’re expensive and sort of exclusively difficult to keep, and it takes a lot of skill to ride. I spent many years showing horses of amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing quality, and there’s nothing nerdy about that. But then on the other hand, there’s the above picture where I can be seen sitting in Jack’s stall reading Sterek fic out loud to him while he eats his dinner. #nerdalert
